Preity Zinta: India outrage over Bollywood actress's #MeToo comment

She has in turn blamed "bad editing" of her interview for the controversy.
The movement, which began in Hollywood a year ago, has seen thousands sharing their stories of sexual harassment.
In recent months, #MeToo has been gaining momentum in India with women calling out comedians, journalists, authors, actors and filmmakers.
Although Zinta is no longer very active in Bollywood, a few years ago she was at the top of the industry and starred as the leading lady in films with superstars Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan - so there remains a lot of interest in what she says.
Her controversial comments were made during a video interview she recently gave to the entertainment website Bollywood Hungama.
In recent weeks, many actors and actresses have spoken out in support of survivors of sexual harassment; and celebrities are regularly being asked to clarify their stand on #MeToo, so it's surprising that Ms Zinta came to this interview completely unprepared, says the BBC's Geeta Pandey in Delhi.

On being asked if she had personally experienced any harassment, she began giggling before answering, "No, I haven't, I wish I had... [Then] I would have an answer to tell you."
She then went on to say that it was "a very relevant question because people treat you the way you want to be treated" - a comment that many said amounted to "victim shaming".
Earlier in the interview, the actress said it was "important that the #MeToo movement had started", but then went on to add that she felt bad "when women are using it when it's not that serious or for personal vendetta or publicity and diluting the movement".
The video of her interview went viral on social media with many accusing her of mocking the #MeToo movement:

Thugs of Hindostan: Critics sink Bollywood's 'Pirates of the Caribbean'

(Warning: This article contains spoilers.)
Thugs of Hindostan is set in 19th-Century India with a noble guerrilla leader, played by Bachchan, and his ragtag army, led by a fierce female archer, attacking mighty English ships to avenge their lost kingdom and assassinated ruler.
The 76-year-old Bachchan plays the role of the elder general, leading and mentoring his army.
Khan plays a cocky robber with shifting loyalties. His duplicitous schemes include robbing local maharajahs and milking rewards from representatives of the East India Company - which was transformed from a trading enterprise into the rulers of India - to whom he also plays informer. He infiltrates the gang of rebels led by Bachchan and wins their confidence. However, he later has a change of heart and joins them in defeating the British.

Sanju: Is this Bollywood blockbuster whitewashing Sanjay Dutt?
Complete with kohl-lined eyes, Khan looks like a poor man's Jack Sparrow - the lead character in Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disney franchise to which Thugs has been compared. Khan swigs rum and takes part in a risqué song and dance routine with a local dancing girl, all the while pursuing his double deception with both the guerrilla leader and a British general, played by British actor Lloyd Owen.
The female lead is Fatima Sana Sheikh, who plays the archer and is in many of the action scenes. But Bollywood star Katrina Kaif, playing the dancing girl. lacks a substantial part.

Rajan Naidu, who has been a fan of Sridevi since he was a child, said he booked an entire cinema hall in Mumbai when her last movie, English Vinglish, was released in 2012. He even named his daughter after Sridevi.
Another fan, Kalpanaben Kodekar, said she travelled all the way from the neighbouring state of Gujarat to see Sridevi "one last time".
"I'm really grateful that they allowed us inside and not just the celebrities. We'll always feel the void Sridevi's departure has created," she added.
Large numbers of police were deployed outside the star's house, on the procession route and outside the Vile Parle Seva Samaj crematorium where the body was taken.
